Wood dowel rods perform a simple, but necessary function: inserted into the lower tiers of a cake, they bear the weight of the tiers above when two or more tiers are resting directly a top one another (without the use of pillars) or of a heavy cake topper or ornament. With out dowel rods, tiered cakes would collapse, the lower tiers being crushed under the weight of the upper tiers. When using cardboard cake boards between the cake tiers, the ends of the wood dowel rods can be sharpened to a point and driven through multiple tiers (and the boards separating them) to secure the tiers together. Cut to the desired length with sharp shears, wire cutters, or a small saw.
